HHS Secretary Clarifies Intent of Recovery Act Funding for Health Centers
While speaking at NACHC’s Community Health Institute in August, HHS Secretary Sebelius clarified that the intent of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding was not to supplant state funding to Health Centers. “Part of a new America is…making investments so that states don’t take money away from Health Centers that they desperately need to use elsewhere, but really supplement the funding that’s already there, and that’s part of the way that this is designed,” said Secretary Sebelius.

MPCA Supports A Better Michigan Future: An Outline for Fixing Michigan’s Structural Deficit and Saving Critical Services
With the state’s fiscal year 2010 to begin on October 1, time is dwindling for balancing the ever-decreasing budget whose shortfall is now nearly $3 billion. The Michigan Senate has proposed budget cuts that would drastically reduce or eliminate health and human services that many Michigan residents rely on for safety, health, and quality of life. Michigan Primary Care Association has joined a growing number of education, labor, and social service agencies to protest more budget cuts and urge state lawmakers to adopt a new tax structure through a campaign launched this week called A Better Michigan Future. MDCH Preparing for Upcoming Flu Season
As the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) prepares for a potentially challenging flu season this year, its chief medical executive, Dr. Gregory Holzman, sent a letter to all Michigan health care providers who are considering getting involved in the 2009 Novel H1N1 Influenza Vaccine Program. According to MDCH’s Office of Public Health Preparedness, federal health officials expect the first results of novel H1N1 vaccine trials in mid-September. Two trials in adult and elderly volunteers started August 7. “We expect first-dose data somewhere around mid-September, if all goes well . . . and second-dose data somewhere around mid-October,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, at a press teleconference. The trials will help determine the dose size and whether each person will need one or two doses to get a good immune response. In related news, HRSA has updated the HRSA H1N1 Guidance to Grantees with some new information; it will continue to update the guidance as pertienent new information becomes available.
